Lebanese Artist Transforms Munition Shrapnel into Art

By Karim Hammam

In southern Lebanon, visual artist Lina Jouni is repurposing dangerous remnants of war to create unique works of art. Since 2024, Jouni has been collecting shrapnel fragments from the rubble of destroyed homes in Roumin, which were left behind by Israeli military munitions.

Turning Destruction into Decoration

The artist transforms these hazardous metal fragments into sculptures, keychains, and various decorative objects. By converting the sharp, lethal pieces into harmless items, she seeks to strip the material of its original violent purpose.

Jouni described the process as a way to reclaim her environment, stating that she turns the horrible material intended to cause harm or death into something beautiful. She noted that her transformation of these remnants is a way to turn something destructive into something benign, effectively turning the material against its intended effect.
