Marks & Spencer’s 2026 Christmas advertisement has been widely praised online, with viewers hailing it a triumph days after rival John Lewis’s festive campaign drew criticism. The ad features actor James Norton as a muscular, beardless Santa Claus and Lucy Punch as a glamorous Mrs Claus, directed by Shannon Murphy.
James Norton’s ‘Hot Santa’ Steals the Show
The commercial opens with Norton’s Santa shaving his trademark beard at the suggestion of his wife, played by Punch, revealing a toned physique that has drawn comparisons to his “Hot Priest” role in Fleabag. Scenes of Santa wandering incognito through London, including a school carol concert led by singer Katherine Jenkins, add a lighthearted tone.
Lucy Punch’s Mrs Claus Earns Scene-Stealer Status
Punch, known for her role in the series Amandaland, channels a “mumfluencer” glamour that reviewers say elevates the ad. Her character is shown secretly purchasing gifts and food at M&S, reinforcing the brand’s festive offerings.
Direction and Tone Set Ad Apart
Director Shannon Murphy, known for Killing Eve, brings a frothy, effortless touch that avoids heavy-handed sentimentality. The ad’s message centers on simple festive enjoyment with friends and family, a departure from the tear-jerking approach common in recent years.
