Police in Londonderry are investigating a viable postal explosive device delivered to a hotel in Ebrington Square on Tuesday afternoon, prompting evacuations and a controlled explosion.

Device discovered and neutralized

The package was found around 15:20 GMT at The Ebrington hotel in the Waterside area. Ammunition Technical Officers carried out a controlled explosion and removed the device for forensic examination.

Police suspect dissident republicans

PSNI Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney condemned the act as shameful and abhorrent, stating that dissident republicans may be responsible. She appealed for public information.

Evacuations and disruption

The hotel and neighboring premises were evacuated. A Halloween funfair nearby remained open. The incident occurred ahead of the city's 40th Halloween festival, which attracts thousands.

Political and community condemnation

Justice Minister Naomi Long called it an utterly shameful and dangerous act, noting the device was placed near families and children. Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant described it as despicable. Local politicians from multiple parties condemned the attack, emphasizing the community's desire for peace.

Possible link to careers event

Some representatives suggested a possible connection to a Ministry of Defence careers fair held at the hotel in September, though others cautioned against speculation.

Police federation warns of futility

The Police Federation for Northern Ireland called the act the height of madness, saying those responsible are reckless thugs whose efforts to destabilize society are futile.
