British comedian and actor Russell Brand, 51, was found guilty on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. The offenses occurred between 2004 and 2009, a period when Brand had achieved what prosecutors described as “staggering fame.”
Verdict Details
The jury concluded that Brand treated women as “disposable” and “amusements” to satisfy his sexual appetite. He was convicted of attacks spanning five years, during which he rose from stand-up comedian to television presenter and Hollywood film star.
Katy Brand’s Past Warnings
Comedian and writer Katy Brand, who is not related to Russell Brand, had previously spoken out about the industry’s role in enabling his behavior. In a 2019 Instagram post republished last year, she recounted how a producer dismissed her concerns about allegations against Brand, noting that a powerful media CEO was courting him for a project. Katy Brand said she quit the production rather than work with him, and the project was subsequently abandoned.
Reaction to the Verdict
Following the guilty verdict, Katy Brand posted on Instagram: “Russell Brand guilty. Good.” She described him as having been “all powerful” in British entertainment for years, with pitch meetings often contingent on including him. She expressed admiration for his accusers and condemned the industry for protecting him.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have confirmed that Brand remains under investigation for two further alleged rapes, including one involving a 16-year-old schoolgirl. One of these allegations was featured in a 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary. Authorities have warned that additional victims may come forward.
