Viable Explosive Device Found in Package at Derry Hotel

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

A suspicious package delivered to a hotel at Ebrington Square in Derry contained a viable explosive device, prompting evacuations and a controlled explosion by army technicians on Tuesday afternoon.

Evacuations and Controlled Explosion

The hotel in the Waterside area of Derry was evacuated around 3:20 p.m., along with several neighboring properties, while a Halloween fun fair was taking place nearby. Army ammunition technical officers attended the scene and carried out a controlled explosion on the package. The remnants have been taken for forensic examination.

Police Investigation Underway

Derry City and Strabane Area Commander Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney confirmed on Wednesday that the device was a viable postal device. She said the investigation is at an early stage, with dissident republicans among the lines of inquiry. Kearney thanked the public for their cooperation during the extended security operation.

Officials Condemn Attack

Stormont’s Justice Minister Naomi Long described the incident as “shameful” and “abhorrent,” noting the device was placed near families and young people celebrating Halloween. Foyle Assembly member Julie Middleton of the DUP called the attack “deeply disturbing” and appealed for anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
