Dozens of people are feared dead after a high-speed train collided with another train south of Madrid, Spain, according to regional authorities. More than 500 passengers were aboard the two trains involved in the crash, which occurred on the Madrid-Seville route.
Casualties expected to rise
An initial death toll of 10 “will almost certainly rise,” a spokesperson for the regional government said. Overturned carriages and makeshift medical tents were visible at the crash site as emergency services worked to rescue passengers.
Government response
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “shocked by the serious train accident” and remained in constant contact with the transport minister. Rail operator Adif confirmed the collision involved a Renfe train and an Iryo service.
