A section of the M2 motorway in Kent remains closed in both directions following a serious collision on the coastbound carriageway near Medway Services late on Tuesday evening.
Closure Details
Kent Police reported the crash occurred at around 9:10 pm on 27 October 2026. The coastbound carriageway is shut between junction 3 for Maidstone and junction 5 for Sittingbourne, while the London-bound route is closed between junctions 5 and 4. A force spokesperson said the motorway is expected to stay closed for a significant period and urged drivers to seek alternative routes.
Diversion Routes
National Highways has set up signed diversions. Westbound traffic should follow the Solid Square symbols: exit at J5 onto the A249 southbound, continue to M20 junction 7, take the M20 westbound to junction 4, then join the A228 northbound to rejoin the M2 at junction 2. Eastbound traffic should follow the Solid Circle symbols: exit at J3 onto the A229 southbound toward Maidstone, proceed to the Cobtree Roundabout, join the M20 eastbound to junction 7, then take the A249 northbound for about five miles to M2 junction 5.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigation work is continuing at the scene, and National Highways expects the closures to remain in place throughout the morning. Motorists are advised to allow extra journey time and anticipate disruption.
