Teenager Oscar Hathway Killed in Crash After Bristol Police Chase

By Sohaib Shams

A 17-year-old boy who died in a crash following a police pursuit in Bristol has been named as Oscar Hathway from the Knowle area. He was a passenger in a white Nissan Juke that collided with a black Audi S3 on the A37 Wells Road in south Bristol shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday, October 25.

Crash Details

The collision followed a short police pursuit involving an unmarked police vehicle and the Nissan Juke, according to Avon and Somerset Police. Hathway died at the scene. Three other people — two passengers from the Nissan and the Audi driver — were taken to hospital with injuries and have since been discharged.

Arrest and Bail

A 17-year-old boy, who was driving the Nissan, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

Independent Investigation

A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because the death followed police contact. The IOPC is assessing the circumstances and will decide whether a formal investigation is required. Avon and Somerset’s Professional Standards Unit has also been informed.

Road Closure and Ongoing Inquiry

The A37 Wells Road was closed for collision investigation and vehicle recovery, reopening just after 4 p.m. on Sunday. A detective inspector from the force’s major crime investigation unit is leading the inquiry pending any IOPC decision.
