A 17-year-old boy has died following a car crash that occurred after a short police pursuit in south Bristol early Sunday morning.
Victim Identified
The victim has been named as Oscar Hathway, from the Knowle area of Bristol. He was a passenger in a white Nissan Juke that collided with a black Audi S3 on the A37 Wells Road just after 4 a.m. on October 25. Hathway died at the scene.
Arrest and Investigation
A 17-year-old boy, who was driving the Nissan, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on conditional bail. Avon and Somerset Police said a detective inspector from the major crime investigation unit is leading the inquiry.
Injuries and Referral
Three other people — two passengers from the Nissan and the driver of the Audi — were taken to hospital with injuries but have since been discharged. A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because the death followed police contact. The IOPC is assessing whether a formal investigation is required.
Road Closure and Ongoing Inquiries
The A37 Wells Road was closed for collision investigation and vehicle recovery, reopening just after 4 p.m. on Sunday. Police said inquiries into the crash are ongoing and that Hathway’s family continues to be supported by officers.
