Explosive Device Found at Derry Hotel in Targeted Attack

By Sohaib Shams

A suspicious package delivered to a hotel at Ebrington Square in Derry contained a viable explosive device, police said, in what they described as a “reckless and targeted attack.” The device was discovered on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a security alert that led to the evacuation of the hotel and several neighboring properties.

Evacuations and Controlled Explosion

A Halloween fun fair was underway in the area when the alert was raised at 3:20 p.m. Army ammunition technical officers attended the scene in Derry’s Waterside area and carried out a controlled explosion on the package. The remnants have been taken for forensic examination.

Police Condemn ‘Reckless Attack’

Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney confirmed a number of people were evacuated after the discovery. Police said the incident caused “significant disruption and distress” to the local community.

Political Leaders React

Stormont’s Justice Minister Naomi Long condemned the attack as “shameful” and “abhorrent,” noting the device was placed near families and young people celebrating Halloween. She praised the police response.

Foyle Assembly member Julie Middleton called the incident “deeply disturbing,” stating those responsible hold no regard for human life. She appealed for anyone with information to contact the PSNI.
