A great white shark thrashed at a female veteran as she leaned down to pet it during a shark tagging expedition off the coast of Georgia.
The incident was captured on video and shared by Knot Lucky, a Savannah-based non-profit that organizes fishing trips for veterans, service members, and their families.
Jimmy Armel, a former Army Ranger who founded Knot Lucky, said the footage was shot during a tagging trip conducted in partnership with Starbrite, Project SeaSafe, and Gray FishTag Research to track migration data.
The organization names each tagged shark after a fallen service member. Armel said the veteran, identified only as Jen, was never in danger because the team had the shark under control while tagging it.
