A referee in Brazil has reportedly set a world record by showing 51 red cards during a youth football match that descended into a 40-minute brawl.
Mass ejections in Minas Gerais U20 match
The incident occurred in a second-division game between Uberlandia and Mamore. A total of 43 players and eight members of playing staff were sent off after violence erupted in the 54th minute, sparked by celebrations following Mamore's goal to make the score 3-1.
Chaos involves weapons and police intervention
According to the referee's report, chairs and stretchers were used as weapons, and even ball boys were seen throwing kicks and punches. The melee only ended after military police intervened.
Previous record stood at 36 red cards
Guinness World Records lists the previous highest number of red cards in a single match as 36, recorded in an Argentine Primera D game in 2011.
