England lock Ollie Chessum says he enjoys leadership responsibilities but insists captaincy is not an immediate goal as the team prepares to face Australia at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.
Captaincy ambitions
Chessum, 26, who captains Premiership leaders Leicester Tigers and toured with the British and Irish Lions last year, has won 38 caps since his 2022 debut. He told BBC Radio 5 Live that while compliments about future captaincy are nice, the role "almost finds the right individual." Current skipper Maro Itoje, 32, was appointed in January 2025, succeeding Jamie George. Chessum says he is learning from an experienced senior leadership group that includes Itoje, Ellis Genge, Jamie George and George Ford.
Club rivalries set aside
Recent on-field clashes with Northampton's Henry Pollock and Bristol's Ellis Genge have been smoothed over. Chessum described both as close mates in the England camp, noting Genge was his captain when Leicester won the Premiership under Steve Borthwick. He expects competitive intensity but no lingering issues as they unite for Test duty.
England seek redemption against Australia
England return to Allianz Stadium for the first time since a 42-21 Six Nations defeat by Ireland in February. After a July loss to world champions South Africa, they recorded wins over Fiji and Argentina. Chessum acknowledged fan frustration but highlighted the squad's uncapped talent and strong leadership balance, expressing excitement about the team's long-term potential.
