Author Casey McQuiston has reacted with satisfaction after Democratic victories in the 2026 Texas midterm elections mirrored a central plot point from their 2019 novel "Red, White & Royal Blue." The results saw Democrat James Talarico defeat Republican Ken Paxton for a Senate seat, the first Democratic Senate win in Texas since 1988, while Gina Hinojosa unseated incumbent Greg Abbott to become the state's first Latina governor.
Novel's 'Texas Binder' Strategy
In McQuiston's alternate-history novel, the bisexual son of America's first female president devises a 14-page political strategy document dubbed the "Texas Binder" to flip his home state blue and secure his mother's reelection. The fictional scenario has drawn striking parallels to the real-world outcomes.
Author's Social Media Reaction
Responding to an Instagram post by Vulture featuring actor Taylor Zakhar Perez as the novel's protagonist Alex Claremont-Diaz, McQuiston wrote: "It was all in the binder." The author also posted a meme referencing the portmanteau "Blexas" (blue + Texas) with the caption: "Blexas not so silly now, is it."
Call for Progressive Engagement
Beyond the celebratory tone, McQuiston urged followers to support progressive politicians in traditionally Republican states, particularly in the South. "Let this remind u to love and celebrate and empower progressive leftists in historically red states," they wrote, adding that the novel's premise came from observing real political shifts a decade ago.
Bestseller and Film Success
"Red, White & Royal Blue" became an instant New York Times bestseller, winning Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Debut and Best Romance in 2019. The 2023 Prime Video adaptation, starring Zakhar Perez, Nicholas Galitzine, and Uma Thurman, became the platform's most-watched movie worldwide during its opening weekend.
Sequel in Production
A sequel film titled "Red, White & Royal Wedding" has completed shooting under director Jamie Babbit, with Zakhar Perez and Galitzine reprising their roles. During a 2024 promotional event, producer Sarah Schechter and Perez expressed hope for both an openly gay British prince and a Democratic Texas to become reality.
