John Lewis Christmas advert criticised for ignoring cost-of-living crisis

The 2026 John Lewis Christmas advertisement has drawn criticism for being out of touch with the financial pressures facing many British households, according to a commentary by Katie Rosseinsky.

Advert features Kristin Scott Thomas in luxurious setting

The advert stars actress Kristin Scott Thomas as a grandmother in a spacious, well-appointed home. The plot shows her grandchildren creating chaos, leading her to transform a spare room into a "disco rave cave" with tinsel and disco lights. Comedian Paul Whitehouse voices a pull-along toy dog that whisks her on a rickshaw ride through London.

Critics highlight disconnect from economic reality

Rosseinsky argues the ad arrives weeks after a report indicated British households are nearly £3,000 worse off after five years of squeezed living standards. With many families struggling to heat homes and afford food, the depiction of a property-rich grandmother creating a lavish playroom feels tone-deaf. The commentary suggests the advert could have acknowledged the difficult festive season while still offering a heartwarming message.

Public reaction anticipated

The advert will run throughout the holiday season, and Rosseinsky warns it may grate on parents calculating pared-back celebrations. She notes the ultimate gift the grandmother might pass on is her property portfolio.
