The Archive of Our Own (AO3), the internet's largest fanfiction repository, has been offline since late October due to a security incident, with the nonprofit Organization for Transformative Works estimating a two-to-four-week outage.
Community Mobilizes
The shutdown has disrupted access to over 18 million works, prompting a wave of community-driven efforts to preserve and share stories. Readers have organized emergency libraries on Reddit, Google Drive, and Tumblr, while writers post new chapters elsewhere.
Ashmita, a 23-year-old reader and writer from India, built a tool to help users navigate shared Google Drive folders. She described the collaboration across fandoms as a reminder of community care.
Author Berklie Novak-Stolz created a "Fanfic Emergency Fund" on Google Drive, accumulating thousands of works. The OTW spokesperson said they empathize with users and are heartened by the creativity and humor in response.
Alternative Platforms Emerge
Other platforms like Wattpad, Tumblr, and Quinn have offered alternatives, but many users say AO3's ad-free, community-funded model is irreplaceable.
