Netflix's Pride and Prejudice Hands Famous Line to Mrs Bennet

Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will feature the novel's iconic opening line spoken by Mrs Bennet, played by Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman, marking the first time the famous sentence has been uttered on screen.

Creative decision behind the line

Show creator Dolly Alderton said the line naturally belongs to Mrs Bennet because the character is consumed with the marital prospects of her daughters, making the sentiment a constant preoccupation.

Cast and characters

The series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy, and Jamie Demetriou as Mr Collins. Lowden's casting arrives amid heavy speculation linking him to the next James Bond role.

Release date and context

The six-episode series debuts on Netflix on 3 December, representing the first major screen adaptation of Jane Austen's novel since the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley.
