Driver banned after object from car roof smashes police windscreen

By Islam El-Sakka

A driver has been banned from the roads for six months after an unsecured object flew off the roof of his car and smashed through the windscreen of a police vehicle responding to an emergency.

Incident on the A120

Glenn Lillie, 34, was travelling along the A120 near Little Canfield in Essex when a large item detached from his white Audi, cleared the central barrier, and struck a marked patrol car on the opposite carriageway. The impact shattered the windscreen, showering the two officers with glass. The police driver managed to bring the vehicle to a controlled halt, avoiding potentially catastrophic consequences.

Investigation and court outcome

Lillie failed to stop at the scene and did not report the collision, later claiming he believed it was unsafe to pull over. Essex Police used camera footage and forensic examination of debris to trace the vehicle to Lillie’s address in Braintree. At Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, he pleaded guilty to three charges of driving a vehicle involving a danger of injury, plus two counts of failing to stop and failing to report an accident. He received a six-month driving disqualification, a 12-month community order requiring 140 hours of unpaid work, and was ordered to pay £244 in costs and surcharges.

Police and safety response

PC Simon Bailey of Essex Police said the collision could have proved fatal without the composure of the officer behind the wheel. He emphasized that every driver has a responsibility to secure loads before starting a journey. Road safety campaigners said the case highlights a persistent and preventable danger on Britain's high-speed road networks.
