Four dead as Italian helicopter crashes on EU mission in Bosnia

By Islam El-Sakka

Four people were killed and 11 injured when an Italian military helicopter crashed on Thursday during a routine training exercise in northern Bosnia, the European Union peacekeeping force (EUFOR) said.

The CH-47 Chinook came down in the area around the town of Brcko. The injured are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment, EUFOR added.

Investigation underway

EUFOR said a “thorough and complete” investigation has been launched and more information will follow. The force confirmed no civilian infrastructure, property, or vehicles were damaged and no civilians were injured.

Wreckage images emerge

Photos published by the Klix news portal showed the largely destroyed helicopter on a lawn at the crash site.

EUFOR mission context

EUFOR’s mission comprises 1,200 soldiers and took over from NATO in 2004 to help maintain security and oversee the military provisions of the peace agreement that ended the 1992–95 war in Bosnia.
