Man in 'Dumb and Dumber' Costume Shot at Wrong Houston Apartment

By Karim Hammam

A man dressed as Jim Carrey’s character from “Dumb and Dumber” was critically wounded early Thursday after allegedly trying to force his way into the wrong apartment at a complex on Bering Drive in Houston’s Greater Uptown area.

Shooting Details

The incident occurred around 2:26 a.m. when the resident, asleep on his couch, awoke to someone shaking the doorknob and attempting to kick the door open. The resident’s girlfriend and their 1-year-old child were in a bedroom. After confirming the stranger was unknown, the resident retrieved an AR-15 rifle and opened the door. The costumed man allegedly tried to push inside, repeatedly insisting it was his apartment. The resident fired a single shot, striking the man in the upper body.

Costume Description

Police said the injured man wore an orange suit and top hat resembling Carrey’s outfit in the 1994 comedy. He was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities believe the man lives in the same complex and may have been intoxicated. Both men are in their 30s. The resident and his girlfriend were unharmed and are cooperating. Police have not released names, and it remains unclear whether charges will be filed. Lieutenant R. Willkens of the Houston Police Department provided details to local reporters.
