Florida father of two William “Stone” Romberg died on Sunday after drowning while attempting to free a seagull that had become tangled in his fishing line near Panama City Beach.
Accident details
Romberg, a beach hospitality manager, was fishing with friends near an inlet when he swam out to rescue the bird. The hook caught on his hand and the current dragged him away, causing him to drown, according to a GoFundMe campaign. His friends lost sight of him before spotting him entangled in the line and attempted CPR.
Family and fundraising
Romberg is survived by his wife, Taylor, and two daughters, aged one and three. Two GoFundMe campaigns have raised more than $300,000 to support the family with funeral expenses and future costs.
Community tributes
Colleagues at the beach equipment rental company La Dolce Vita described Romberg as a valued team member with a kind heart. The Carillon Beach Association called him a cherished community member. The employer of his widow, Dahler & Co., also expressed support for the family.
