At least three people were killed and five injured when a section of a volcanic rock formation known as a fairy chimney collapsed in Turkey's Cappadocia region on Thursday, officials said.

Collapse near parking area

The incident occurred near a parking lot at an entrance to the Goreme area of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its distinctive rock formations and ancient underground cities. Governor Huseyin Kok said recent heavy rains likely caused the collapse.

Rescue operations continue

Medical and rescue teams were deployed to the site, and heavy machinery was used to remove debris. The governor confirmed that teams were still searching for anyone who might be trapped. Two of the dead were Turkish nationals; the third victim's nationality was not disclosed.

Investigation opened

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced an investigation into the incident. The collapse happened on Turkey's Republic Day holiday, when the area would have been crowded with visitors.
