Rock Collapse in Cappadocia Kills Two, Injures Five

By Basant El-Faramawy

At least two people were killed and five injured when a rock formation known as a fairy chimney collapsed at the Göreme open-air museum in Turkey's Cappadocia region on Thursday, local media reported.

The collapse occurred near the museum entrance around 15:15 local time. Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök said the victims' bodies were recovered from the rubble, while Justice Minister Akın Gürlek warned there could be additional victims still trapped.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, though local media suggested heavy rain may have triggered it. Search and rescue operations continued at the site, the justice minister said.

Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracts tourists worldwide for its distinctive cone-shaped rock formations formed by volcanic activity.
