An 8-year-old girl was seriously injured after being attacked by at least one wolf inside an enclosure at the Johannismühle Wildlife Park south of Berlin on Wednesday, local officials said.
The attack occurred during a special event for children at the park in the Teltow-Fläming district. The girl was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. A zookeeper intervened before two other girls who were also inside the Arctic wolf enclosure could be attacked, officials said. The wolves had been given water at the time of the incident.
The zoo has been closed until further notice while an investigation takes place. Earlier this year, a wolf bit a woman in a shopping area in Hamburg, which authorities believe was the first such attack since wolves returned to Germany in 1998.
