A 10-year-old girl reported kidnapped from her apartment in Canby, Oregon, was found safe Wednesday afternoon at a residence in Oregon City, police said. Violet Hay was located at 2:45 p.m. local time, more than 12 hours after an unknown male allegedly entered her home, assaulted her 12-year-old sister, and abducted her by force.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

A SWAT team surrounded the Oregon City residence and took a suspect into custody, Canby Police Chief Jose Gonzalez announced at an emotional news conference. "I have great news. We found her safe and alive," Gonzalez said. The 12-year-old girl was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries and remains under care.

Investigation Underway

Officers responded to the Canby apartment complex at approximately 1:47 a.m. Wednesday. Capt. James Murphy described the investigation as "very dynamic" and said authorities are still working to understand the circumstances. Clackamas County Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owen said investigation results will be submitted Thursday morning for charging decisions.

Multi-Agency Search Effort

The search involved local and state police as well as the FBI. Investigators interviewed family members, collected surveillance footage, and developed suspect and vehicle descriptions. The girl's parents are cooperating with authorities. Canby School District announced increased police presence at Carus Elementary School, where Violet is a student, as a precaution.
