Christopher Lloyd has revealed he was "shocked" when he learned Michael J. Fox would replace Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in the 1985 film Back to the Future, recounting the moment during a recent interview with Fox for Interview magazine.
Lloyd's initial frustration
Lloyd, 88, who played Emmett "Doc" Brown across the trilogy, said the news came after six weeks of night shoots. He recalled Steven Spielberg announcing the casting change during a lunch break, leaving Lloyd concerned about having to reshoot his scenes. "My first thought was, 'Oh my god, I'm going to have to do all that again,'" Lloyd said.
Fox praises Lloyd's warmth
Fox, now 65, credited Lloyd for welcoming him despite the difficult circumstances. "You were so open to me under hard circumstances," Fox told Lloyd. "You don't think your process is more important than anyone else's process. You do your process, you let us do ours, and then magic happens."
