Kimi Antonelli nears F1 title after dominant US Grand Prix win

Kimi Antonelli has moved to the brink of a historic Formula 1 world championship following a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The 20-year-old Italian driver is now in an impregnable position, needing only two points in the upcoming Mexico City race to secure the title.

Mercedes boss praises exceptional performance

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described Antonelli's performance as the best of his career so far, characterizing it as the race of a champion who has not yet officially secured the crown. Wolff noted that the young driver appeared to outperform the car, which featured a new upgraded specification that had previously struggled in Malaysia.

While teammate George Russell finished eighth following a five-second penalty, Antonelli dominated the race from pole position. Wolff highlighted Antonelli's unique ability to adapt to the difficult operational window of the current car, suggesting his driving style is perfectly suited to the machinery.

A historic pursuit of records

If Antonelli clinches the championship in Mexico, he will become the first Italian to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Furthermore, he is set to shatter the record for the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's 2010 record by more than three years.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised the Italian's aggressive yet effective driving style, noting his ability to maintain high performance while managing the technical demands of the car. Stella called him the deserving leader of the championship.

Maintaining focus for Mexico City

Despite the looming title celebration, Antonelli maintains a relaxed mindset. He stated his intention to approach the next race with the same focus as any other weekend, aiming to enjoy the competition and fight for another victory.

The championship race remains mathematically open for one more round; Antonelli will guarantee the title in Mexico unless George Russell or Lewis Hamilton win the race, and even then, Antonelli can secure the crown by finishing ninth, or tenth if Hamilton takes the victory.
