American football fans attending the NFL regular-season game in Paris reported a positive experience, noting that widespread protests across France did not significantly impact their weekend. Fans gathered at the Stade de France on Sunday to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the New Orleans Saints 16-10, maintaining high energy despite civil unrest in the capital.

Protests and Security in Paris

The game took place a day after more than 400,000 people participated in nationwide demonstrations protesting educational funding and the high cost of living. According to the French Interior Ministry, approximately 110,000 of these protesters were concentrated in Paris. While many demonstrations remained peaceful, clashes occurred in several cities, leading security forces to utilize tear gas and water cannons. In Paris, 64 arrests were made on Saturday, primarily involving suspected weapons offenses or participation in groups planning property damage or violence.

Visitor Experiences and Local Hospitality

Despite the unrest, many American visitors described the local population as welcoming and hospitable. Some fans noted that staying informed through local news and hotel concierge services helped them navigate the city safely. Visitors mentioned that while some businesses had boarded-up windows, the disturbances appeared localized and did not prevent them from exploring the city or enjoying the sporting event.

NFL International Expansion Efforts

The matchup in Paris is part of the NFL's ongoing strategy to expand the sport's global audience. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed confidence in the security arrangements coordinated with French authorities prior to the game, noting that protests are not uncommon in France. Ministry data indicated that the Saturday demonstrations resulted in fewer issues than the previous week, with approximately 1,300 arrests nationwide and a significant decrease in injuries reported among security forces.
