Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas appeared as a guest judge on Dancing With the Stars during its Horror Movie Night episode, delivering scores that sparked sharp division among viewers. The episode featured a double elimination and saw Ballas award notably low marks early in the night.
Low scores draw gasps and criticism
Ballas gave a 4 out of 10 to actress Julia Stiles and professional partner Ezra Sosa for their Argentine Tango, citing slow gauchos, lack of sharpness, and postural issues. Fellow judges Derek Hough and Carrie Ann Inaba each awarded a 7, while Bruno Tonioli gave an 8. Ballas also scored Tatyana Ali and Jan Ravnik a 4. Her marks drew audible gasps from the studio audience and visible shock from the contestants.
Higher marks later in the show
As the episode progressed, Ballas awarded higher scores, including a perfect 10 to Harry Shum Jr. and Jenna Johnson for their Contemporary routine inspired by the film Saw. She gave a 7 to her son, professional dancer Mark Ballas, and his celebrity partner Maura Higgins.
Social media reaction split
Viewers on X reacted strongly. Some argued Ballas's scores should not count toward totals, while others praised her rigorous standards and called for her to become a permanent head judge. Comments ranged from "Shirley Ballas shouldn't be allowed to have her scores included" to "We need Shirley Ballas to be a judge full time."
Double elimination concludes episode
At the end of the night, Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess were eliminated alongside Jackson Olson and Emma Slater. Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars continues Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with streaming available the next day on Hulu.
