Arsenal to appeal Max Dowman red card after Carabao Cup exit

By Fatma Younis

Arsenal have announced they will appeal the straight red card shown to 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman during Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie against Fleetwood Town. Dowman was dismissed in the 85th minute for violent conduct after reacting to a heavy challenge by Fleetwood's Harrison Neal, with his foot making contact despite not fully kicking out. The match ended 1-1 before League Two side Fleetwood won 5-3 on penalties, eliminating the Premier League champions.

Second dismissal this month

The sending-off marks Dowman's second red card in recent weeks, having also been dismissed while playing for England's Under-19 side. As it stands, the teenager faces a three-match suspension for violent conduct, defined as using or attempting to use excessive force against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.

Arteta's frustration and squad concerns

Manager Mikel Arteta gave Dowman a scathing look and appeared to make an angry comment as the player left the pitch. After the game, Arteta said the team had been "very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate." The dismissal leaves Arsenal short on wing options, with Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis and Noni Madueke all currently injured. The Gunners return to Premier League action away to Liverpool on Sunday.
