The race for an open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa has intensified as candidates Ashley Hinson and Josh Turek prepare for a showdown on November 3. The contest features Republican Representative Ashley Hinson against Democratic state Representative and two-time Paralympic gold medalist Josh Turek.
Competing Platforms and Political Strategies
Hinson, who is backed by Donald Trump, is navigating a complex political landscape. While she has praised the former president, she has also voiced disagreement with his stance on Russia and his handling of diesel fuel costs. Hinson has positioned herself as a bipartisan lawmaker capable of working across the aisle, despite her earlier campaign promises to be a strong ally to Trump.
Turek is running on a centrist platform described as "common-sense prairie populism." Seeking to flip the seat for Democrats for the first time since 2008, Turek has gained an endorsement from former President Barack Obama. He has criticized the economic impact of current tariff policies and the ongoing conflict in Iran, arguing that many Democrats have overlooked small, rural communities.
Economic Concerns and Policy Debates
Economic issues, particularly the rising costs of gas, fertilizer, and living expenses, are central to the campaign. Turek has highlighted the struggles of Iowans facing high costs, while Hinson has defended the "One Big Beautiful Bill" tax legislation, arguing it provides essential tax relief to families despite Democratic criticisms regarding Medicaid funding cuts.
The candidates also diverge on foreign policy and healthcare. Hinson has taken a firm stance against empowering dictators, specifically regarding Russia and Iran, while Turek has campaigned on the need to address the generational consequences of war and the rising costs of essential services. As the midterms approach, both candidates are emphasizing their ability to deliver results through bipartisan cooperation to solve local economic problems.
