Democrat Mary Peltola, a candidate for Alaska’s US Senate seat, and her family sustained minor injuries following a multi-vehicle car crash on Saturday. The accident occurred while the family was traveling to the Alaska Federation of Natives annual banquet.
Campaign Schedule Adjustments
Peltola’s campaign manager, Cheryl Bruce, confirmed that while the family is in good spirits, medical professionals have advised Peltola to delay upcoming campaign events in Fairbanks and Bethel to allow for recovery. The incident has interrupted the start of her "Alaska Always tour," an eight-stop campaign push scheduled for the final week before election day.
The campaign plans to resume scheduled events on Tuesday, beginning with a stop in Homer, Alaska.
Police Investigation Underway
The Anchorage Police Department responded to the multi-vehicle collision at approximately 6:55 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities reported that Peltola’s family and the occupant of a second vehicle were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An occupant in a third vehicle involved in the collision declined medical transport. Police stated that the circumstances surrounding the collision are currently under investigation.
High-Stakes Senate Race
Peltola, an Alaska Native and former congresswoman, is running to challenge the Republican incumbent, Senator Dan Sullivan. The race is considered one of the most closely watched in the nation as both candidates seek to secure support from Alaska Native voters. The election environment has been marked by recent legal tensions, including efforts to address potential confusion regarding candidate names on the ranked-choice ballot.
