By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Real Madrid issued a public apology to the Chinese people on Wednesday following comments by forward Kylian Mbappé that were deemed disrespectful to Mao Zedong, the founding leader of Communist China.

Club statement and Chinese response

In an online interview, Mbappé referred to Mao as "a Chinese dictator" while discussing his favorite meme. The remarks triggered immediate backlash, leading at least three Chinese companies to terminate endorsement deals with the French striker. Mbappé subsequently apologized, calling his comment "ill-judged" and acknowledging the hurt caused.

Real Madrid's statement expressed deep respect for China's history, culture, and citizens, and said the club joins Mbappé's public apology. The club reaffirmed its commitment to respect and understanding among cultures and its desire to strengthen ties with Chinese fans.

China Media Group suspended broadcasts of Spanish league matches and games featuring Mbappé, demanding apologies from La Liga, the player, and the club. The Spanish league also apologized. China's Foreign Ministry said it took Mbappé's apology seriously but it remains unclear whether he will regain lost commercial partnerships.
