George Russell Critiques 'Rubbish' Pace at US Grand Prix

By Salma El-Sakka

George Russell has expressed frustration following a disappointing performance at the US Grand Prix, describing his pace at the Circuit of the Americas as "rubbish." The British driver, who entered the season as a title favorite, struggled throughout the race and ultimately finished in eighth place.

A Difficult Race for Russell

Starting from sixth on the grid, Russell’s race was further complicated by a five-second time penalty issued early on due to a clash with Oscar Piastri. The penalty cost him several positions, but Russell admitted that the primary issue was a lack of competitive speed. He noted that he currently lacks answers regarding why his performance has dropped so significantly and expressed a need to understand the root cause of the struggle.

Antonelli Nears Formula 1 World Championship

In contrast to Russell's difficulties, Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli secured his ninth win of the season in Austin. The 20-year-old Italian driver has now positioned himself on the verge of becoming the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. Antonelli currently holds a 123-point lead over Russell, with only 125 points remaining to be contested over the final five rounds of the year.

The Race for the Title Heads to Mexico

To clinch the championship in Mexico City next week, Antonelli only needs to finish in ninth place. Following his victory in the United States, Antonelli stated that his focus remains on enjoying the season and fighting for wins rather than worrying about the championship pressure. He credited his team and his father for helping him stay relaxed and perform under scrutiny.
