First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that she has secured a localized, temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky. Scheduled to begin on October 29, the agreement aims to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and establish a safe passage for civilian evacuations.

Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky

The city of Oleshky, which is currently under Russian occupation, is described by the First Lady as being on the brink of disaster. The remaining population, estimated at between 1,700 and 2,000 residents, consists primarily of elderly individuals in urgent need of food, clean water, and medical supplies. Melania Trump stated that her intervention was necessary to make the evacuation of the elderly and the delivery of aid possible.

International Coordination and Response

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian military is coordinating the timing of the ceasefire and acknowledged Melania Trump's role in reaching the agreement. Simultaneously, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that it would comply with the ceasefire orders. The agreement also includes assurances that an impartial American media organization will be permitted to accompany ground teams during the period.

Diplomatic Context

President Donald Trump expressed support for his wife's efforts, noting her focus on saving children and stating that both sides are cooperating with her. The First Lady's involvement in the negotiations reportedly began during a private discussion at her Fostering the Future event during the U.N. General Assembly last month. This localized ceasefire occurs amidst broader efforts by the Trump administration to engage in peace talks regarding the conflict that has been ongoing since February 2022.
