Hegseth Faces Impeachment Push After Midterm Losses

By Sohaib Shams

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is confronting a formal impeachment effort and bipartisan scrutiny in the wake of Republican losses in the midterm elections. Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, has introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth, marking a rare intra-party challenge to a Cabinet secretary.

War in Iran Cited as Election Factor

Senior Republicans acknowledge that the war against Iran, championed by Hegseth, contributed significantly to the party's electoral setbacks. The defense secretary, who styles himself as "secretary of war," has faced criticism for disclosing war plans in a commercial messaging app that inadvertently included a journalist, allegations of war crimes in the Caribbean, and the purge of top generals.

Budget Legislation Stalled

Congress has yet to pass the Pentagon's $1.5 trillion budget request, with lawmakers from both parties citing Hegseth's combative approach as a key obstacle. The National Defense Authorization Act, which funds troop salaries and weapons production, remains stalled after months of complaints that the Pentagon failed to consult Congress on critical issues including the Iran war. A separate $350 billion military spending bill advanced by President Trump through a special budget process has also failed to move forward.
