Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill has called on Ferrari to make Lewis Hamilton the team's clear number one driver following a collision between Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Hill urges Ferrari to back Hamilton
Hill, the 1996 champion, posted on X that Ferrari should "make Lewis #1 Ferrari driver" to end the internal debate. He argued that Hamilton will deliver for the team if given full backing.
Mexico clash triggers tension
The incident occurred on the opening lap of Sunday's race, when Hamilton and Leclerc made contact. Leclerc received a penalty, while Hamilton dropped down the order. The collision ultimately handed victory to Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Hamilton demands serious talks
After the race, Hamilton said he needed "serious talks" with the team. Ahead of this weekend's Sao Paulo Grand Prix, he doubled down on criticism of Leclerc, stating he races differently against him compared to other drivers. Hamilton said he would not apologize for being authentic and would not be silenced.
Leclerc absent in Brazil
Leclerc missed Thursday's media day in Brazil after attending the birth of his first child. The pair have not yet had an opportunity to discuss the situation with team principal Fred Vasseur.
Championship implications
Hamilton currently sits third in the drivers' championship, 14 points ahead of Leclerc with four rounds remaining.
