Coventry boss Lampard criticizes VAR after Everton defeat

Coventry boss Lampard criticizes VAR after Everton defeat

By Karim Hammam

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard questioned three key decisions after his side fell to a 3-1 defeat at Everton in the Premier League on Friday.

Everton comeback

Yann Gboho gave Coventry the lead after half-time, but Thierno Barry scored twice and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added a late goal to secure a comeback victory that moved Everton up to fifth place.

Penalty appeals rejected

Lampard felt Coventry should have been awarded a first-half penalty when James Tarkowski tugged Caleb Yirenkyi's hair while challenging for a ball. Referee Stuart Attwell dismissed the claims, and VAR Timothy Wood did not intervene. Lampard said the hair pull constituted a foul, even if not violent conduct.

Further controversies

The Coventry boss also argued Taiwo Awoniyi was fouled by Vitalii Mykolenko on the edge of the penalty area before the opening goal, though replays suggested the contact was outside the box. He also claimed Barry handled the ball before his second goal, but VAR ruled there was insufficient evidence of handball.

Moyes responds

Everton manager David Moyes denied Barry handled the ball and criticized the hair-pull rule, calling it ridiculous and urging authorities to fix it. The result leaves Coventry 16th in the table.
