Cole Palmer faces England exile under Thomas Tuchel

By Fatma Younis

England manager Thomas Tuchel has delivered a blunt assessment of Cole Palmer's international future, stating the Chelsea forward "misses too many opportunities to impress" after excluding him from the latest Nations League squad.

Tuchel's verdict on Palmer

Tuchel confirmed Palmer was fully fit and available for selection but chose to stick with players from the previous camp, including new call-ups Josh King and Jobe Bellingham. The German said the decision was not personal but based on the impact of those already in the squad.

Palmer's surprising omission

The 24-year-old, who scored in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, has won 14 caps but featured in only three of Tuchel's 26 matches in charge. His last appearance came in a 1-0 loss to Japan in March, where he was substituted before the hour mark.

Fitness checks and club form

England verified Palmer's fitness with Chelsea before the squad announcement. Blues manager Xabi Alonso said Palmer had played with "discomfort and pain" recently but confirmed the club provided medical information to the national team. Despite the snub, Palmer has started the season strongly, netting his 50th Premier League goal in just 105 appearances.

Tuchel's ruthless track record

The manager has previously excluded high-profile players such as Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold, demonstrating a willingness to make hard decisions without sentiment. Palmer now faces intense competition from options like Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Eberechi Eze.

Long road to redemption

With the next England squad not due until March 2027, Palmer faces an anxious wait to prove his worth. Tuchel insisted the competition remains open, but his faith in the current group suggests a difficult path back for the Chelsea playmaker.
