Jon Stewart called for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to relinquish his leadership role following Democrats' historic midterm victory that gave them control of both chambers of Congress.
Stewart Attacks Seniority System
On Thursday's episode of his podcast "The Weekly Show," Stewart argued that Democrats must "tear down the obstacles and old way of thinking" starting with the seniority system, saying Schumer does not deserve credit for the sweep and fought against many winning candidates.
New Senators Signal Opposition
Schumer, 75, has led Senate Democrats since 2017 and faced criticism during Trump's two terms. Several newly elected senators, including Adam Hamilton of Kansas, Troy Jackson of Maine, and Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, have said they would not support Schumer for majority leader.
Democrats won Republican strongholds such as Texas and Kansas on Tuesday, retaking the House and Senate and rendering President Donald Trump a lame duck for his final two years.
