Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reaffirmed his confidence in Cole Palmer after the forward was surprisingly omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad for the November Nations League fixtures.
Tuchel Explains Omission
Tuchel said on Friday that Palmer “misses too many opportunities to impress” and noted the 24-year-old withdrew from the October camp due to injury concerns. The Germany-born coach opted to retain the majority of his previous selection, leaving Palmer out for a second consecutive international break.
Palmer's Strong Club Form
Despite the international snub, Palmer has started all nine of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season, contributing five goals and three assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. He has also formed an effective attacking partnership with Morgan Rogers, who was included in the England squad.
Alonso Focuses on Chelsea
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland, Alonso said he had not discussed the England situation with Palmer but expressed satisfaction with the player’s attitude and impact. “We are very happy with Cole. I think he is enjoying his game, he is connecting very well with the other attackers,” Alonso said. He added that the club’s focus remains on domestic matters and dismissed suggestions the omission would test Palmer’s character.
