SAVE Student Loan Plan Ended, 7.5 Million Borrowers Must Switch

By Islam El-Sakka

The Trump administration has discontinued the Biden-era Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, forcing approximately 7.5 million federal student loan borrowers to transition to alternative repayment options. The Education Department declared the SAVE plan "illegal" and set a final deadline for borrowers to choose a new plan.

Transition Deadline Passes

About 2 million borrowers have already selected a new repayment plan. Those who missed the deadline are now receiving notices this month informing them they have been automatically moved to a different plan.

Advocacy Groups Warn of Higher Payments

Student advocacy groups argue that lower-income borrowers who benefited from reduced monthly payments — or qualified for $0 payments based on income — will face significantly higher bills under the remaining plans. The administration contends the change will streamline repayment programs and ensure borrowers pay what they owe.

Call for Borrower Experiences

Borrowers affected by the recent changes are encouraged to share their experiences with the transition and any challenges they face under the new repayment terms.
