McDonald's plans to deploy a voice-activated AI system named Archy at the majority of its U.S. drive-thru locations in 2027, Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski announced during an earnings call this week. The technology, which has been in testing at select restaurants since June, aims to improve ordering consistency and accuracy while freeing up staff for hospitality tasks.
AI System to Save Labor Hours
Archy is expected to save at least 50 labor hours per week per store, according to McDonald's. Kempczinski said the system gives crew members more time to focus on customers and ensure order quality. The company did not specify whether the labor savings would lead to store-level layoffs.
Industry Trends and Consumer Preferences
Rival Burger King has introduced an AI assistant called Patty, embedded in employee headsets to coach staff on friendly language. However, research from Metrigy indicates a gap between business expectations and customer acceptance: only 22 percent of consumers prefer interacting with AI agents, while businesses estimate that figure at around 40 percent. A February study found 85 percent of consumers prefer human agents, with those aged 45 and older showing the strongest preference for human interaction.
