Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has described Russell Brand’s actions as “horrifying” and praised the bravery of the women who spoke out against the comedian.
Burnham commends victims and journalists
Speaking to Times Radio, Burnham said: “It’s horrifying what Russell Brand has done. And I’d firstly like to praise the bravery of the women, the victims in the case, who’ve come forward and had the courage to speak out. But yes, the journalists too, who supported those who had been abused by Russell Brand and worse. So all of them deserve our praise for having that courage to stand forward.”
Brand convicted of rape and sexual assault
Brand was convicted of raping one fan and sexually assaulting three women during his peak in showbusiness, and faces a lengthy jail term.
Police anticipate more victims coming forward
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley told BBC Breakfast he would not be surprised if “many more” alleged victims came forward, noting that high-profile cases often lead to an upsurge in reporting. He added that police are currently investigating two further cases involving Brand.
