Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, appeared in a Florida federal court on Friday charged with one count of possessing indecent images of children, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Arrest and charges
Markle was arrested after FBI agents searched two Los Angeles-area storage units he had rented since 2008. The search yielded about 78 items, including film negatives, slides, and books alleged to contain child sex abuse material. Witnesses identified Markle in two of the images, which appear to show a man in his 30s or 40s, suggesting the alleged abuse dates back decades.
Court hearing
The 30-minute hearing was conducted with Markle in a wheelchair, escorted by two U.S. Marshals. Federal prosecutor Courtenay Derry outlined the charges. The court ordered home detention at Markle's assisted living facility in Florida with electronic monitoring. No plea was entered; an arraignment date in California will be set later.
Investigation and prior allegations
FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities "moved quickly" and vowed to use every resource to protect children. Last month, Philippine police obtained a warrant to examine devices allegedly removed from Markle's former home in Cebu, where he lived until May. Four boxes of electronics and tapes were handed over by his son, Thomas Markle Jr. In 2019, London's Metropolitan Police received a letter with claims about Markle but passed it only to the Sussexes' office, not other law enforcement. The Met has since referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over its handling.
Family estrangement
Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018 and broke contact last year, according to the BBC. In October, the Duchess of Sussex said she was "deeply distressed" by the allegations and her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. The Duke and Duchess have not commented on the arrest.
