Zoo Atlanta visitors will welcome a new pair of giant pandas on Friday as Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, make their public debut after a two-year absence of the species at the zoo.
Arrival and acclimation
The 6-year-old pandas arrived from China in September under a 10-year loan agreement. Both were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Ping Ping has distinctive dark circles around his eyes, while Fu Shuang has a slightly protruding forehead, according to the Xinhua News Agency. They have spent recent weeks acclimating to the newly renovated Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove.
Diplomatic context
The zoo's panda enclosure had been empty since four pandas returned to China in 2024, ending a 25-year partnership amid strained bilateral relations. Arthur Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and a major Atlanta philanthropist, called the return an exciting moment for the city. China has long used panda loans as diplomatic gestures, allowing agreements to lapse when tensions rise.
Other U.S. zoos
Zoo Atlanta is one of three U.S. zoos currently housing giant pandas. The National Zoo in Washington returned three pandas to China in 2023 before receiving Bao Li and Qing Bao in October 2024. The San Diego Zoo debuted two pandas in August 2024. A decade ago, the International Union for Conservation of Nature reclassified giant pandas from endangered to vulnerable, reflecting population growth in the wild.
