Bomb threats across Europe this week have disrupted flights at UK airports including Heathrow, Birmingham, Stansted, Newcastle, and Glasgow, leaving passengers uncertain about compensation.
Compensation unlikely under extraordinary circumstances
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) classifies bomb hoaxes as “extraordinary circumstances,” meaning airlines are not responsible for delays or cancellations caused by security risks. Passengers are unlikely to receive compensation.
Airlines still owe duty of care
Which? Travel editor Rory Boland said that while compensation is not due, airlines must provide food, drink, or hotel accommodation depending on delay length. Passengers can choose a refund or rerouting at the earliest opportunity, though delays may be prolonged if destination airports close for threat assessment.
Security concerns and industry response
The wave of hoaxes has raised concerns about information warfare alongside cyber attacks on European infrastructure. The International Air Transport Association urged authorities to trace the threats and assured that aviation security measures maintain public safety.
