Three US inmates executed in rare same-day triple execution

Three death row inmates were executed across three U.S. states on Thursday, marking the second triple execution in a single day this year and the first since 2010 before August.

Executions in Indiana, Florida and Alabama

In Indiana, 50-year-old Jeffrey Weisheit was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. local time after a lethal injection. He was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s two children, Alyssa and Caleb Lynch, in 2010. The Indiana Department of Correction confirmed the execution used pentobarbital, the same drug involved in a botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee.

Florida and Alabama carry out executions

Hours later, Florida executed 64-year-old Jesse Guardado at 6:13 p.m. Eastern Time for the 2004 stabbing and beating death of a 75-year-old. In Alabama, Michael Shannon Taylor received a lethal injection for the 1991 murders of an elderly couple. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall confirmed the execution.

California commutes all death sentences

On the same day, California Governor Gavin Newsom commuted the sentences of all 548 death row inmates to life in prison without parole. The state has not carried out an execution since 2006.

Political reactions and national trend

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey criticized Newsom’s move, stating Alabama will continue to enforce the death penalty. The number of U.S. executions has risen during President Donald Trump’s second term, with Trump signing an executive order directing the Justice Department to prioritize capital punishment. Amnesty International reported 47 executions in 2025, the highest since 2009, though the long-term trend shows a decline in death penalty use.
