Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was stopped by police on Wednesday after a member of the public reported seeing him carrying a bow and arrows at a Northumberland beauty spot.

Police response

The 24-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international, who joined Newcastle from Benfica for a fee around £30 million in August, was with a friend when their vehicle was intercepted by six police cars, including armed officers, about seven miles from the original sighting. Police searched the car and seized the bow and arrows but determined the two men posed no threat to the public. Dedic cooperated fully and had no ill intent, according to the club. Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, 34, and former defender Paul Dummett, 35, happened to be in the area and stopped to offer assistance while police spoke with Dedic. Northumbria Police said they received reports of two men carrying a bow and arrows along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area, and confirmed the items were seized in the Darras Hall area and were believed to be for recreational use.

Club and international schedule

Newcastle, currently 13th in the Premier League with 11 points from nine games, have not commented on the matter. The team travels to Fulham on Saturday before the November international break. Dedic, who has appeared in 10 league and cup matches this season, has been named in the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad for Nations League fixtures against Sweden on November 14 and Romania on November 17.
