Ukraine Sees Guarded Optimism After Trump Midterm Losses

By Basant El-Faramawy

Ukrainians reacted with guarded optimism and dark humor to the Democratic sweep in Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections, viewing the results as a potential check on President Trump's approach to the war with Russia. After Trump openly sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's replacement, a joke circulated online suggesting it was Americans who wanted a new president.

Congress Seen as Potential Check on Trump

"The general level of optimism in Kyiv and in Ukraine has risen as a result of these elections," said Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the Ukrainian Parliament. "We believe that Congress will be a deterrent against attempts by Trump to make deals with Putin." Merezhko cautioned against euphoria, noting that Trump has two years left in his term and Ukraine must maintain good relations with both U.S. parties.

War Enters Critical Winter Phase

Ukraine faces its worst winter of the nearly five-year war in coming months, with depleted air defenses and military ranks as Russia targets civilian energy infrastructure. The midterm outcome's impact on peace negotiations will depend largely on Trump's course during his remaining time in office, as the country's survival remains intertwined with shifting political currents in Washington.
